tysons corner. still rather dark. 6:42 on the sunrise. 78 degrees with light sprinkles going to be occurring over the next few hours. by lunch time i think a little bit of sun returns and this afternoon sunny, hot, highs in the low 90s with a 5:00 p.m. temperature of 89. probably not going to be till 4:00, 4:30 when we get that high. you can see the light showers we're watching from northwest. not all reaching the ground but west of town and south and east of town we're seeing it. rapahannock, just getting into fauquier county some of the heavier showers. this is all moving toward sperryville and warrenton and culpeper the next hour. down south we've had a little lightning down here, the eastern shore. temperatures this morning are well in the 70s. monika samtani, it's 6:00 a.m. problems are creeping up? they're creeping up and so ared volumes. we're -- are the volumes. we're going to take a live look from sky 9 first at route 50. look at that long slow lineup. this is at route 50 heading inbound toward nutley street

and the beltway. sorry about that. it's only 6:00 in the morning. we're going to go over to our maps. the beltway otherwise looks great. there is a problem if you're coming in from southern maryland. all those corridors are fine but a pedestrian struck on the northbound side of pennsylvania avenue at richy marlboro road. i know crews are on the scene dealing with it so be aware of that, northbound pennsylvania avenue at richy marlboro road. i'll keep you posted on that situation. we'll take a live look outside and show what you it looks like first if you're planning to head here on college park on the beltway. this is fine and no issues as you head into silver spring. just a bit slow right now. i'm going to step out and let you know if you're planning to take metro this morning, foggy bottom metro station, all entrance escalators are out. buses have been requested. the station remains open. i'll be back with more traffic in a few minutes at 6:12. tonight president obama will formally accept the democratic nomination for reelection. wednesday it was a former president who was in the

spotlight. >> people are still talking about president clinton's speech in charlotte last night. kristin fisher is live in our satellite center with the latest on the democratic national convention. good morning, kristin. >> reporter: good morning. bill clinton was classic clinton last night. he ignored the teleprompter, improvised lines and even though he did take the stage earlier than expected, he still ran late. he delivered a 48-minute long prime time speech, a speech that was longer than his infamous convention keynote address in 1988 but the delegates loved it. >> no president, no president, not me, not any of my spread sorors, no one could have fully repaired all the damage that he found in just four years. when congressman ryan looked into that tv camera and attacked president obama's medicare savings as, quote, the

in charlotte's football stadium. that's where the carolina panthers play. but because of the threat of severe weather including night nipping, he will have to -- including light nine, he will have to move -- lightning, lehave to move the whole thing inside. you can see the speech right here on channel 9. he's scheduled to start around 9:00 p.m. you can also follow the convention by logging on to our website wusa9.com. you can learn which virginia lawmaker says the president can easily win the commonwealth, a very big battleground state. they believe that. we'll tell you who that is and all that and more on wusa9.com right now. fairfax county police uncovered evidence of a dog fighting ring. officers raided a home on tipton lane near franconia road yesterday. our cameras were there as investigators hauled away several pit bulls, treadmills and other evidence to suggest dogfighting. the fate of the dogs remains uncertain but experts say some fighting dogs can be

rehabilitated. >> they lack a lot of socialization, they're sometimes a little less confident but they can be placed after some rehabilitation here, some hand feeding, working with our volunteers, going out for walks, doing the things normal pets do. >> right now the suspected ring leader is only facing charges of being an unfit pet owner but more charges could be added. montgomery county police are releasing a picture of one of three people they say is behind vandalism and theft in the damascus area. this is one of the two suspects police believe stole things from cars. the suspect would try to find unlocked car doors. this happened last week in the plantation's two neighborhood. anyone with information should call montgomery county police. rebuilding the holy acres community in woodbridge, virginia is now on the fast- track. nearly a dozen families will move back in soon thanks to a big round of help from volunteers. people from project mend a house rehabbed some of the

mobile homes wednesday. holy acres you may remember was nearly wiped off the map during tropical storm lee last year. it is 6:06. jessica doyle is watching your money and your jobs. >> talk about the presidential election is all about jobs. the unemployment report is coming out. what would you expect? >> probablyemployers probably added about 120,000 jobs. it would keep the current rate at 8.3%. roughly 12.8 million americans remain unemployed. the august jobs report also critical one since the federal reserve meets less than a week later focusing in on the state of the job market. but some occupations are doing very, very well right now. according to our partners at career builder, job listings are up 74% year over year for software engineers. you can thank all the smart devices and the internet. customer service representatives have seen a 50% increase in job listings.

rounding out the top five, social media managers up 48%. truck drivers are up 45%. that's thanks to an uptick in manufacturing activity. also pharmacy technicians. they saw a jump of 43%. on the campaign trail,a lot lot of folks are -- a lot of folks are asking the question how are your finances doing compared to four years ago? cnn reports that as a nation we're making less. the median household income four years ago $55,000 a year. right now it's $51,000. a smaller income, that means less money to put aside for a rainy day of course so it makes sense. americans are also saving less money. when president obama took officer, the savings rate was more than 6%. the most recent data shows that's dropped to a little more than 4% today. of course there are a lot of ways you can slice and dice the economy, but these are just focusing in on some of the important things that make our finances work or not work. >> exactly. >> thanks, jess. >> you've got it. our time is 6:08.

on the northbound side of route 4, pennsylvania avenue at richy marlboro road, dealing with a pedestrian struck there. as you head out of upper marlboro, be aware of the activity there, route 4 north at richy marlboro road. more on traffic at 6:18. 6:12 now. it's cool schools time this morning. we're going back in time, way back. and the trip starts in washington, d.c. when dinosaurs walked the earth. >> reporter: handling something over 60 million years old can be tricky. >> you have to be very delicate because they could fall apart. >> reporter: tiffany may only be a teenager but she gets to work with some of the most talented scientists in the world at the smithsonian's museum of natural history in d.c. her work is with ancient mollusks. >> the ones i've been working with are in new jersey.

>> what we're doing is drilling a little bit of powder off of the shell which then will analyze chemically to understand the temperature that these shells were growing in 68 million years ago. >> go ahead and get yourself set up. >> reporter: youth engagement through science or y.e.s. is a paid summer internship program at smithsonian. make no mistake. this is not about clerical work or being a gopher. students can connect with up to 500 scientists working with smithsonian. >> they're using d.n.a. sequencers. they're using high powered microscopes. >> what's cool about y.e.s. is we're getting high school students so we're trying to get students that the a younger age to see that science is something that they can do, that science is fun and interesting. >> reporter: and it translates to younger students as well. >> young people are here with their families and they peek in the window and they see somebody like tiffany working

70s. i think over the next hour or two, wouldn't be surprise fundamental we get a couple of lower 80s across the boorpd. 6:4 -- board. 6:42. we have a ways to go before the sun does rise. we'll see more sun this afternoon than this morning. winds turn southeast to southerly at 5, 10 miles an hour. with the sunshine this afternoon, just a slim chance we'll see a stray thorpe. highs are going to make 90, 92. going to be a hot day. average high is 83. tonight partly cloudy skies. this morning the scat erld showers north -- scattered showers north and west of town. you see a few returns trying to get in toward marshal. coming in or going out on 66 when you get into fauquier county, you start to see some of take. go south and west toward the shenandoah valley, luray, new market, this is all moving northeast toward culpeper and may missville -- and amissville. some of these have more moderate to heavy showers. stuff in southern maryland has moved into the lower eastern

shore. east of denton some lightning and thunder there. in delaware a couple of sprinkles not far from st. might st. michaels north of easton. in loudoun county it's 74. 75 in springfield. to our east prince george's county, bowie 74. upper marlboro 75. here in d.c. as we look outside on our michael & son weather cam -- actually, we're looking east. a couple of breaks in the cloud cover. northeast winds at 8 miles an hour at national and the humidity is up at 84%. already a heat index of 81. so we've got the showers this morning. you can see them lining up in pennsylvania. they come back in here toward eastern tennessee. this is what's going to move through the next few hours. by the afternoon looks like most of this will slide south and east of us. that's why i'm expecting more sunshine with the slight chance of a storm. the good news in the long range is that on saturday, a strong cold front comes through. that's going to change everything for us for the better.

dulles toll road north of that i'll step out and show you what it looks like from our sky 9. a disabled tractor-trailer taking up the right side of the road and, yes, this will slow you down. you can see police have arrived at the scene. you'll have to squeeze by to the left to get around it. i'll keep you posted on this one and the delays it's causing. let's go back over to the maps and this time over to an accident, it was a pedestrian struck on the northbound side of route 4 avritte chi--- after ritchie-marlboro road. if you're planning to head northbound on 95, we'll take a look live in springfield. no problems to report heading northbound you've just got those delays in quantico, dumfries, woodbridge of course and then springfield trying to get on to 395. i'll be back with an update on the situation on the beltway at 6:25. i have a commuter alert. some good news for drivers in tysons corner. by this time tomorrow, the ramp from southbound route 123 to westbound route 7 will open.

and that should make traffic move a little smooth-er. that's what the prompter says, smooth-er. the ramp can reopen now. the work for the tunnel is in the final stages. so the ramp is near what will be the greensboro station. that's part of the silver line that should open late next year. you know that is music to the businesses' ears in that area because it's been tough in a long, long road. >> some of the area in tysons is a lt better already. there's just more real estate there. >> i would like a little more color in the metro ramps. it's so industrial gray. >> yes, hence the silver line. >> makes on difference on your commute. >> it does. time for another check of our question of the morning. it 162% of employees -- it is 62% of employees say they would work harder if their employer would provide one of these

welcome back. 6:23. your weather first on this thursday morning. a few showers out there. we have them southwest of town on the eastern shore. we may see some come through the next few hours. i want to show you the day planner because the morning will feature a lot more clouds like it does now. you're looking at the iwo jima, the marine corps memorial. temperatures will be climbing quickly thank. once we get the sun into the low 90s. everything about the nationals this season seems to be about setting records and reaching new heights. >> they've been worried about the bats recently. not over the last two nights.

in fact, last night they became the third team in baseball history to hit six home runs in back-to-back games. now they have more wins than this franchise has seen in 16 years. >> they are incredible. nats and cubs last night. the local boys -- [ inaudible ] bryce harper is only the third teenager ever to have two multiple homer games. gio gonzalez on the mounds, took a no hitter into the 6th inning. he got his 18th win of the season. nats top the cubs 9-1. d.c. goes for the series sweep tonight. the orioles have been looking pretty hot but couldn't pull off the sweep last night against the blue jays. toronto scored four runs in the 7th including for on this davis single. baltimore falls 6-4. they are now a game back of the yankees in the al east. but the two teams begin a four- game series tonight at camden yards. the redskins will be talking with reporters later this morning. then soon they will be off to

i'm andrea roane. i'm mike hydeck. we're glad you're here. meet peat live in the soup on the weather terrace. temperatures 80 degrees and it's only 6:30 in the morning. >> heat index was running over 780 -- 80 this morning. humidity still in place. this is all going to change by sunday but we have a couple of rough days we'll have to get through as far as the heat and humidity is concerned. we start with a shot from our michael & son weather cam from tysons corner looking off toward the east with mostly cloudy skies. we have a few breaks. 86 by noon. a few showers in spots. this afternoon just a stray thunderstorm. high around 92 with a 5:00 p.m. temperature of 89 degrees. you'll notice the moisture. north and west of town it's pretty light. south and west of town we're certainly seeing some of the showers, some heavier ones, too, as we look at it there from shenandoah, luray, sperryville, up 340 approaching front royal. we have other showers out there as well with temps in the 70s. again a better afternoon. let's go inside to monika samtani here at 6:30. she has an update on timesaver

traffic. we do have a problem on the beltway west side of town. it's slowing you down on the inner loop if you're trying to get up toward the georgetown pike. let me just show you what it looks like on our traffic land camera on the northbound side of hien 95 -- i-95. a broken down trailer on the right side of the road. you have delays pretty solid trying to get there. inner loop that's northbound 495 just after the georgetown pike here on the west side of the beltway. i'll keep you posted on that situation and what they're doing about it as well. let's go back over to our maps this time to 270. southbound side, no issues as you head down from frederick. you just have the slow traffic into clarksburg. once you're in germantown it will be a lot better heading toward rockville and the point where the lanes divide. slowing down college park into silver spring. here's what it looks like in college park. you don't really hit that delay until the 95 interchange. i'll be back with more task coming up at 6:43.

good morning. >> reporter: good morning. of course bill clinton was the big star. he delivered a 48-minute long, a very long speech. but one thing he did not talk much about was women's rights issues like abortion and equal pay, pay discrimination. so he left that to speakers like marilyn -- maryland senator barbra mikulski and sandra fluke, the georgetown university law student who was shut out from a congressional hearing on contraception just earlier this year. >> during this campaign we've heard about two profoundly different futures that could await women in this country. and how one of those futures looks like an offensive, obsolete relic of our past. >> those republicans in the senate tried to block our efforts to go further and end pay discrimination once and for all. but hey, we, the women, of the senate with president obama by our side, we're going to keep

fighting. our shoulders flair because you deserve equal pay for your hard work. >> the democrats clearly courting women voters trying to exploit the republican party's so-called war against women. no surprise there. there was one very surprising unscripted moment, a rare thing at modern political conventions. the democrats actually struggled to complete a voice vote amending their party platform. the platform to include language referring to god and to jerusalem as i.r.s.'s capital. so it -- as israel's capital. it was a very unusual dissent but they had bill clinton to bring them all back together at the end ever the night and dejust -- of the night and he did just that. quite a speech he gave and tonight the big moment everybody has been waiting for. president obama. she be taking the stage right around 10:00. >> kristin fisher live in our satellite center this morning. the secret service is looking into a man's claim he

stole mitt romney's federal tax records. a tennessee newspaper received the claim and the demand for $1 million to not release the records. romney's accounting firm says there's no evidence the files were stolen. ann romney will be campaigning for her husband tomorrow in virginia. she'll hold a women for mitt rally in leesburg. mrs. romney held a similar rally in ohio yesterday. it was the second visit to that swing state after the republican convention last week. elderly women from fairfax county is recovering after she was attacked by a rabid beaver. the animal attacked the 83-year- old woman along the shoreline of lake barkroft on tuesday night. two fishermen saw the whole thing take place and they rushed over and killed the beaver with their paddles and pulled the woman to safety. people we spoke to were surprised because beaver attacks are pretty rare. >> beavers usually don't want to have anything to do with you when you encounter them. they swim the other way. >> the victim was identified as

lillian peterson. she was taken to fairfax innova hospital for minor injuries. sunshine' expected to be fine. -- she's expected to be fine fine. the toll to ride the entire stretch of the dulles toll road will go up 50 cents on january 1 and will double by the year 2015. tonight's public hearing will be held at stone bridge high school in ashburn. the meeting runs from 5:00 till 8:00. there will be two meetings next week, one in reston, the other in mclean. 6:36. jessica doyle is still watching your money. >> she is. there's a new ray to save at the grocery store and -- way to save at grocery store and it's already in your pocket. >> if you're careful about your shopping list, you'll spend less than the impulse shopper. we know that. now there are a crop of apps to help us stay organized. shop smart magazine recommends an app like this one called

push pins. it's -- it let's the whole family think up a shopping list. like if somebody finishes the milk. all they have to do is send a note. it scans an item to find digital coupons. another pick is the grocery iqapp. it lets customers shop and share shopping lists by scanning barcodes on items. it also searches for coupons and it will sync your list with the supermarket loyalty program. one recommendation, coupons are great but keep in mind some of the most common and popular discount categories are for items that could actually boost your waistline. we're talking your cookies, snacks, preprocessed foods. just something to think about. it is officially football season. the cowboys take on the giants. dallas has already won something pretty big. it's the most valuable team in the n.f.l. forbes ranked cowboys at number one, total value topping $2

welcome back. monika here with timesaver traffic. it is looking much better now. if you're traveling on the beltway west side of town, and inbound on i-66 as well, you just have the slow traffic, the normal stuff leaving manassas

into centreville. then pretty much route 50 off and on toward 123. let's go to our traffic camera where there had been a disabled tractor-trailer taking up the right side of the road right here after the georgetown pike. it was moved to the right shoulder. you can see delays are beginning to dissipate heading northbound on the beltway here toward the georgetown pike and beyond. let's go over to our maps again. if you're planning to head northbound on i-95, it is still pretty slow and heavy as you leave dale city toward woodbridge. then again heading towards springfield. we'll take a live look in springfield on our camera and northbound i-95. you're just going to see that volume here leaving 6:44 headed to 395 which does slow now from landmark up toward seminary road and now we'll go to our mdot camera on the southbound side of i-270. overall delays route 85 toward 121. then here at shady grove road it seems like it's a little below the speed limit heading down to the point where the lanes divide but the lanes are open. i'll be back with a look at big picture at 6:58. >> back to you.

radar over the past few hours, you'll notice the showers north and west of us. this stuff is so light, a lot of it is not reaching the ground but south and west of town, this is where we're starting to see some light showers into fauquier county. you head down into rapahannock and culpeper county, this is where we're starting to pick up more showers, especially west and southwest of culpeper. even a little lightning starting to show up. this stuff is moving east, northeast. sperryville, aim missville, culpeper. this guy will come right that way toward you over the next half-hour. on the eastern shore, the stuff that was near easton and denton is into delaware with a little bit of lightning as well. other than that, it's just a mild and muggy morning. 75 in easton. it's 75 also in baltimore. out to the west shenandoah valley low 70s there. even cumberland is at 70. as we look outside on our michael & son weather cam here in tysons corner, we've got some breaks in the cloud cover. cloudy to mostly cloudy sky. reagan national reporting 78 degrees on the hour with the clouds with a heat index of 81.

thanks to the dew point in the 70s and humidity 84%. so a batch of showers really stretches out from albany back through pennsylvania, down toward even tennessee. this will be coming through this morning over the next few hours. then behind it when we turn sunnier, there's a slim chance for an afternoon storm today and tomorrow, but by saturday strong cold front comes this way. that's going to change the pattern big time. 92 this afternoon. just a stray afternoon storm. a couple of showers this morning. tonight we're back in the low to mid-70s, a patch of fog, maybe upper 60s north and west with light winds of the tomorrow 92 degrees. again a sunny day with a stray afternoon storm. but saturday mid-80s. afternoon and evening showers, some thunderstorms. by sunday, though, the front is through. it's going to be fantastic sunday, monday and tuesday, even into weld as we creep back up -- wednesday as we creep back up into the 70s. nighttime lows in the 50s. 60s in town. 6:46. starting tonight the maryland department of agriculture is stepping up its fight when it comes to west nile virus.

>> it will begin spraying to kill mosquitoes in some neighborhoods having problems with the bugs. over the next week, there will be extra spraying in the marley section of anne arundel county as well as in the milford area, baltimore county. ed payne reports west nile cases are spiking around the country. glb 70% of the cases are in six states. texas is the harmdzest hits. the -- hardest hit. the state it battling the source, mosquitoes by ground and by air. they trapped a second mosquito that tested positive for west nile. that's helped city crews focus efforts on specific areas in a bid to wipe out mosquito breeding grounds. >> it is the vipghtor, the -- victor, the mosquito. it bites a human and pass it is on to a human. without the mosquito, you break that chain. >> reporter: the virus nearly killed dr. don reed of dallas seven years ago. he was paralyzed and had to

a new report says there was chaos in the national airport control tower after an incoming plane nearly collided with two planes taking off. it happened south of the airport on july 31. the report blames miscommunication for causing the near miss. the national zoo is going to get $400,000 to study the health of giant pandas. the money is also going to be used to upgrade the zoo's panda cams. the gift came from the motor ford -- ford motor company. gio gonzalez took a no hitter into the 6th in the nationals game last night. coming up on cbs this morning, the now we are of yelp. >> before that, one more check on traffic and weather so stay right here with 9news now.
